The R&A Announces Qualification Pathways for The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush.
The R&A has officially unveiled the qualification pathways for The 153rd Open Championship, set to take place at Royal Portrush in July 2025. As golf’s oldest and most prestigious major, The Open provides the ultimate test for the world’s best players, all vying for the chance to lift the Claret Jug.
The 2025 edition will see 15 events across 11 countries offering qualification spots through the Open Qualifying Series (OQS), alongside regional and final qualifying events in Great Britain and Ireland. A new exemption pathway has been introduced, ensuring players from LIV Golf can also earn their place at Royal Portrush.
With so many routes to qualification, the stage is set for an incredible mix of legends, rising stars, and qualifiers, all competing for the ultimate prize in links golf. And while the pros fine-tune their game in pursuit of a spot in The Open, amateur and club golfers can also prepare for their own competitions with top-tier golf apparel, footwear, and accessories from Function18.
New Qualification Pathway for LIV Golf Players
In a significant update for 2025, The R&A has introduced a new exemption category allowing LIV Golf players to qualify for The Open via their season standings.
- The leading player not already exempt, finishing in the Top 5 of the 2025 LIV Golf Individual Season Standings after LIV Golf Dallas, will secure a place at Royal Portrush.
This addition complements existing qualification routes through the PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, and International Federation Ranking, ensuring that The Open remains a global championship that welcomes the best players from every circuit.
Existing Exemption Categories
✔️ FedEx Cup standings on the PGA TOUR
✔️ Race to Dubai rankings on the DP World Tour
✔️ International Federation Ranking, covering players from:
- Asian Tour
- Japan Golf Tour
- PGA Tour of Australasia
- Sunshine Tour
Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, emphasised the importance of keeping The Open inclusive and competitive:
“The Open is a global championship for the best men’s golfers, and each year, we review our exemptions to ensure we offer pathways into the Championship based on results achieved on the leading professional tours.
“We acknowledge that players competing in LIV Golf should also have the opportunity to secure places in The Open through its individual season standings and existing pathways.
“We are proud to offer a wide range of opportunities to qualify globally and look forward to seeing which golfers will emerge to take their place at Royal Portrush in July 2025.”
