Use movement quality as the filter. If the athlete has altered walking mechanics, significant soreness or joint pain, conditioning is not the first priority. Persistent symptoms require appropriate professional assessment.

Aerobic Support
Use sustained moderate work, controlled breathing and stable RPE. The session should finish with capacity remaining.
Threshold Development
Use longer hard intervals on a day that does not compromise the primary sport’s key skill or speed session. Recovery afterward must be planned.
Repeated-Sprint Conditioning
Short cycling intervals can train repeated high output, but they do not reproduce the direction changes or technical decisions of court play. Treat them as conditioning, not sport practice.

Track Total Lower-Body Load

Add notes for impact, cutting, jumping and heavy torque. Two sessions may have the same duration and RPE yet stress the body differently. A tennis match and a seated endurance ride should not be treated as interchangeable just because both lasted an hour.
Review next-day soreness, sleep and performance in key sessions. If cycling repeatedly reduces running pace or court movement quality, its placement or intensity needs adjustment.
Avoid the Leaderboard Trap
Cross-training athletes may treat cycling as secondary and then ride excessively hard because the class environment becomes competitive. Leaderboard rank and music can override the weekly plan.
Enter with a ceiling. Decide the maximum RPE, power zone or resistance strategy before class. Staying below that ceiling is successful execution when the purpose is aerobic support or recovery.
This discipline is particularly important before matches and key running workouts. The athlete is training a programme, not one isolated class.
Progress Cycling Volume Gradually
Low impact allows volume to rise quickly, but connective tissues, saddle tolerance and cycling-specific muscles still need adaptation. Adding three classes immediately can create knee, hip, calf or saddle discomfort.
Begin with one strategically placed session. Assess its effect on the next primary-sport workout. Add volume only when recovery and performance remain stable.
Athletes returning from injury should follow the plan of their healthcare and performance team. Pain-free cycling does not automatically confirm readiness for running, jumping or cutting.
Make the Weekly Hierarchy Explicit
